FRAMELINE AWARD
Born in Chicago and raised in a large Puerto Rican family, Rose Troche scored a hit with GO FISH (SFIGLFF 1994), her feature film directorial debut. Troche co-wrote and produced the film with its star, Guinevere Turner, whose character's frustrations and elations in the search for love resonated with a generation of young lesbians. GO FISH earned multiple accolades, including the GLAAD Media Award, a nomination for the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize, and the Berlin International Film Festival's Teddy Award. Frameline is proud to mark the10th anniversary of GO FISH with this Festival's screening in honor of Rose Troche.
The Festival's retrospective screenings of Troche's work also include the feature films which followed on the success of GO FISH - BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS (SFILGFF 1998) and THE SAFETY OF OBJECTS (2001). All three films exhibit Troche's stylish touch and her penchant for depicting the quixotic vicissitudes of looking for love in the modern world, whether the setting is the lesbian community of Chicago's Wicker Park, or a gathering of straight (and not-so-straight) male Londoners trying to get in touch with the "wild man" within, or the confused suburban heterosexuals in the fiction of A.M. Homes.
While the trajectory of Troche's career has taken her steadily forward, it's also taken her full circle, back to the lesbian subject matter that marked her breakthrough. This time, Troche is making history on the small screen, as Co-Executive Producer and a director for the landmark Showtime Original Series "The L Word." Troche has also been making waves at HBO with her directing work for "Six Feet Under" and "Women on Women: Tales of Seduction."
What will Rose Troche do next? One current project is a script in development, LUCINDA'S CHANGED, which Troche intriguingly describes as "a sequel to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein." Clearly, Rose Troche has much more humor and insight to share with us in years to come. For the delights she's already given us, we proudly honor her with this year's Frameline Award.
