AUDIENCE AWARDS
Each year the Festival presents three Audience Awards selected and voted upon by Festival audience members. Ballots are issued at each screening (only those present can vote) and collected in our shiny ballot boxes located in the theater lobbies. The ballots are tallied throughout the Festival, with audience winners announced at the Closing Night Party for Best Feature, Best Documentary, and Best Short Film.

At the 26th Festival, June 2002, the Audience Award for Best Feature was given to Sherman Alexie’s THE BUSINESS OF FANCYDANCING, the story of a gay Native American man who returns to his family on the reservation. The screening of THE BUSINESS OF FANCYDANCING was met with a standing ovation and a riveting question-and-answer session with author and director Alexie.

The 2002 Audience Award for Best Documentary was given to Dee Mosbacher for RADICAL HARMONIES, a histroy of the women’s music movement from the folk singers of the 70s to the “riot grrls” of the 90s. At the historic screening, more than two dozen of the femal performers highlighted in the film took to the Castro Theatre stage for song and celebration.

Geoffrey Haley’s THE PARLOR won the 2002 Audience Award for Best Short Film. Enjoyed at one of the Festival's favorite afternoon indulgences, Fun In Boys’ Shorts, The Parlor is a surreal and hilarious satire of chat room culture.

Who will the wiiners be for the 2003 Audience Awards? That’s completely up to you. Enjoy the Festival!
